Ain't No Party Like a Hardy Party: An Interview With Hardy Wallace

Date: Mon, Jul 19, 2010 Wine Tasting

One of the great things about the 2010 Wine Bloggers' Conference was getting to meet and hang out with some really awesome wine people from around the country. One of the guys that I have always wanted to meet is Hardy Wallace of Dirty South Wine, Murphy-Goode, and now NPA (Natural Process Alliance) fame. Hardy went from being a total rock star to being an even bigger rock star when he emerged victorious from the Murphy-Goode contest for A Really Goode Job. The gig got Hardy relocated to California, where he did some great work for Murphy Goode. When his...

The Wino Fantasy Continues: From Baseball to Football

Date: Sat, Jul 17, 2010 Wine Tasting

This baseball season saw the advent of a new league that brought together two of my favorite things, wine and baseball. A great group of winos from around the country came together to participate in the Major Wino Fantasy Baseball League. The first order of business here today is some gloating on my part. As of the start of today's games, I am enjoying a pretty sizable lead in the league. I was fortunate enough to pick up a couple of studs that didn't cost me very much (players were selected in an auction format), such as Ubaldo Jimenez and...

July 16 - The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Date: Fri, Jul 16, 2010 Wine Tasting

The Good The good this week goes out to the wine community that participated in the #pinotnoir Twitter tasting last night. I think that anything that provides an excuse for drinking some great Pinot deserves to occupy this space. I would especially like to note the power trio of Ed Thralls from Wine Tonite, Tamara Belgard from Sip With Me (made sure I got your URL right this time), and Joe Herrig from Suburban Wino, who did most of the heavy lifting for the event. Great job guys, and thanks for bringing this together, and involving so many people from...

Contemplations on France, Texas, and Bubbly

Date: Thu, Jul 15, 2010 Wine Tasting

The events of the last week have gotten my brain churning on some things. For those who haven't read my last couple of posts, a local winery was purchased at auction by Laurent Gruet, of the sparkling wine powerhouse from New Mexico, Gruet Winery. Although I think the overall reaction around the state has been pretty positive, there are always complainers in a situation like this. Among the complaints, a major one has been about a big European concern (Gruet is originally from Champagne France) stepping into the Texas wine pool. For those of you who have never lived among...

A Late Harvest Gem from Spokane: 2007 Lone Canary Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

Date: Wed, Jul 14, 2010 Wine Tasting

It has been a little while since I last posted a review, so I thought it was high time I get some tasting notes out into the wild. Tonight I'm drinking a little desert wine that I picked up on my recent visit to Spokane, the 2007 Lone Canary Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Lone Canary was the last stop on my recent winery tour with fellow bloggers, Eric Hwang (Bricks of Wine) and Josh Wade (Drink Nectar). We had tasted several of the wines produced at the winery, and as what seemed like an afterthought, we were served this wine....

The CapRock Sale - The Most Expensive Three Minutes in Texas Wine History?

Date: Tue, Jul 13, 2010 Wine Tasting

It's not every day that you see an established winery up on the auction blocks, although the sight does seem to be becoming more common all the time. This afternoon saw the sale of Cap*Rock Winery, which is one of the most troubled, but also most beautiful, wineries in West Texas. The winery itself is an approximately 23,000 sq ft facility that is situated on almost 25 acres of land. Cap*Rock winery filed for bankruptcy last December, with unpaid creditors accumulating over time. The auction date was set for yesterday, July 12th, and interested parties attended from around the state,...

Breaking News - Texas Winery Purchased by Gruet

Date: Mon, Jul 12, 2010 Wine Tasting

I will have more details on this coming up this evening, but the New Mexico bubbly house, Gruet Winery, has purchased the CapRock Winery, and does have plans to begin production of Texas "Champagne". Early estimates that I had been hearing for the purchase price of the winery had been in the $2-3 million range, but when the smoke had cleared, the final damage came in at $6.5 million. The auction took little more than a minute and a half, and the tall, handsome Frenchman was left holding the winning number. Should be interesting to see what this means for...

Kicking the Tires on a Texas Winery

Date: Mon, Jul 12, 2010 Wine Tasting

As of this writing, I am preparing to attend the auction of the Caprock Winery. For those who don't know, this is a West Texas winery with an absolutely beautiful facility, that unfortunately has not been able to make wines to match over the years. Photo taken from Williams Auction website I will be posting the details of the experience tomorrow, but I wanted to point you to a couple of posts that my friend Russ Kane from VintageTexas has up about the auction. You can find details about the auction, as well as a great suggestion for some High...

Flight of the Conchords Aren't New Zealand's Only Great Export

Date: Mon, Jul 12, 2010 Wine Tasting

Image taken from Chud.com Thursday is a big day in the Twitterverse, as wine lovers all over the world will be participating in the #Pinotnoir Twitter tasting event. There are corresponding real world events being held in locations around the US, from Atlanta, to Boston, to Lubbock..., that's in Texas, for those not in the know. Lubbock is also the home of yours truly, and I'm really excited about the selection of Pinot noirs that we will have available at the tasting. As of right now, we have some really great Willamette Valley Pinots in the mix, as well as...

July 9 - The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Date: Fri, Jul 9, 2010 Wine Tasting

The Good Times is good for funny wine blog posts this week. If you follow a lot of the wine bloggers that I do, you have doubtless been kept in stitches following their RSS feeds. There were simply too many great posts this week to narrow the list down to a single one, so here are a few of my favorites from the last week - Hardy Wallace is a bad mutha! He gets all crunk talkin' about making some natural wine (the secret is a big-ass can of Tecate, or talons, or something). Just be careful if you are...

Breaking News - Wine Bloggers Win Powerball Lottery

Date: Thu, Jul 8, 2010 Wine Tasting

Note - This is a fictional story. This is a story of what might have been. Please don't ask any of the bloggers in this story for money; we are as poor as we've ever been. A Rose By Any Other Name - Duchman Family Winery

Date: Thu, Jul 8, 2010 Wine Tasting

Things have been hopping recently for the folks at Duchman Family Winery. First, they started up their Movie in the Vineyard series, which sounds like a ton of fun, then they put the finishing touches on their name change (from Mandola Estate Winery), and then they pull down some major praise for their 2008 Dolcetto, which won Double Gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. All in all, it seems like exciting times at the Driftwood Texas winery. I had actually heard about the impending name change from my friend Clint Bingham a while back, and then I started...

The Main Event - Living Large in Walla Walla

Date: Wed, Jul 7, 2010 Wine Tasting

My trip to Walla Walla for the Wine Bloggers' Conference was not my first rodeo in W2. Last October was actually the beginning of my love affair with this city. We were visiting my father-in-law in Kennewick, and decided to take an afternoon to make the short drive to the little wine heaven in the Southeastern portion of Washington state. My wife and I instantly fell in love with the place, and not just because of the great wineries. The entire city has such a warm and inviting feel to it, and my feelings certainly were not diminished by the...

Here's to Greece (Wish I Was There Too)

Date: Tue, Jul 6, 2010 Wine Tasting

Photo courtesy of Constance Chamberlain After being constantly bombarded over the last couple of days by beautiful images of Greece on Facebook, thanks to my friends Joe Roberts (1WineDude), Constance Chamberlain (Wine Connoisseur 101), and Joe and Amy Power (Another Wine Blog), I have decided that I should post a review of a Greek wine in their honor. The crew who is currently in Greece is there for a press junket for Wines of Santorini and the Brand Action Team. Joe Roberts has written a great post that outlines what's going on, as well as specifying some challenges that he...
