Bottling at Veramar Vineyards

Date: Sat, Sep 4, 2010 Wine Tasting

I've gotten addicted to bottling this summer. It really is a great way to spend a day and it gives you a real sense of accomplishment to see the palettes fill up with cases of wine. A couple of weeks ago I want out to Veramar Vineyards to help them with their bottling. Like most of the wineries in the area, Veramar does not have their own bottling line, so they use a bottling truck instead.

Derenoncourt Interview in Vineyard & Winery Management

Date: Fri, Sep 3, 2010 Wine Tasting

Stephane Derenoncourt has a wide ranging interview in Vineyard & Winery Management Magazine. He has a lot to say winemaking today and is especially complimentary about our own Boxwood Winery: When Boxwood approached me in 2006, they asked me to visit the vineyard and winery. They had already done a lot of homework with regard to planting the vines and developing the local terroir. They were

Wine Dinner with Loudoun Valley at Vinifera

Date: Fri, Sep 3, 2010 Wine Tasting

The first wine dinner we hosted with Fabbioli Cellars at Vinifera Wine Bar & Bistro was so successful, Jason asked if we would be interested in doing a second one with Loudoun Valley Vineyards. I have always loved Bree's wines so I jumped at the chance! Jason and Bree have known each other for a while, in fact, the Vinifera White and Vinifera Red are made specifically for Vinifera (though,

Charlie Adler was interviewed by the local NBC Affiliate's Nightside team: "I don't watch the show regularly, but I do know the Salahis and I can tell you Michaele Salahi doesn't know a thing about running a winery or wine in general," Adler told Niteside. "Michaele is just there to be a girl on (her husband Tareq's) arm. She has no clue what she's doing." "Don't be fooled by television."

New Optical Sorting Machine at Chateau Brane-Cantenac

Date: Thu, Sep 2, 2010 Wine Tasting

During En Primeurs, when lavish praise was being heaped upon Bordeaux winemakers, the joke was often made that many Chateaux owners had already placed down payments on Maseratis and Lamborghinis. Over at Chateau Brane-Cantenac, Henri Lurton had his eye on another piece of machinery: Au chai, la vendange est triée manuellement sur deux tables disposées en parallèle. Après l'érafloir, une ligne de

The Next Generation of Loudoun County Winemakers

Date: Wed, Sep 1, 2010 Wine Tasting

One thing that has contributed to the fame and success of the best wineries in Europe is family. Children who grew up surrounded by wine and played in the vines learn to respect the land and the generations of winemakers who have come before them. So, it is nice to see that Loudoun County winemakers are creating the second generation of winemakers. Of course, it is surprising that so many are

#Cabernet Day is September 2nd!

Date: Mon, Aug 30, 2010 Wine Tasting

In case you haven't heard, September 2nd is Cabernet Day. Dreamed up by Rick Backas at St. Supery winery, #Cabernet Day is meant to be a celebration of the Cabernet family of grapes across all social media sites (and even in person). Several of the wineries and wine shops on the event site are hosting live events (sadly, none in Virginia). So, pop open a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon or

Harvest Report from Chateau Brane-Cantenac

Date: Mon, Aug 30, 2010 Wine Tasting

Earlier this month I wrote up a mid-harvest report from Bordeaux. That report left off Chateau Brane-Cantenac. I now have their update, and it sounds like a great harvest: The hot weather of July allowed the vine to catch up the week of lateness that the vine had accumulated since the flowering. On July 22nd we saw the first berries that changed color. The "mi-veraison" was around August 5th

Crepes at DelFosse Winery

Date: Sat, Aug 28, 2010 Wine Tasting

One of the things that I love about Virginia wineries is that they are not afraid to experiment. Because Virginia is such a young wine growing region winemakers are willing to try new varietals to see what really marries well with the terroir. But, it is not just about experimenting with grapes, its also about experimenting with events. Breaux Vineyards has events built around cajun foods,

Fabbioli Cellars Releases 2008 Tannat

Date: Tue, Aug 24, 2010 Wine Tasting

If you are a member of the Fabbioli Speakeasy Club, specifically a member of the "Fabbioli Dry Reds" club then you have a special treat in the latest shipment. Included with your wines is the new 2008 Tannat. Doug has always used Tannat as a blending wine, but this is his first release as a standalone varietal and it should be a big hit. This wine has a big nose to it, I definitely picked

Sauternes in a Test Tube?

Date: Sun, Aug 15, 2010 Wine Tasting

I've been puzzling over this video from Château Broustet for about a week: Chateau Broustet teaser1.... from Château Broustet on Vimeo. It turns out it is part of a larger marketing push from Sauternes producers: The Union des Grands Vins Liquoreux de Bordeaux will launch 'Sweet Hours' in New York and San Francisco in November. It has already run a series of these after-work parties aimed at 25-

Do you Believe in Gay Meritage?

Date: Sat, Aug 14, 2010 Wine Tasting

Who says wine writers don't have a sense of humor? Steve Heimoff, editor for Wine Enthusiast, bring the funny: Forceps, allied with a group calling itself Citizens United Against Discrimination in Grape Varieties, challenged Prop 888 in court. Yesterday’s decision by Judge Franzia, which upheld Citizens United, was hailed by Forceps as “a great victory for freedom. “Never again will Malbec, or

Follow up on Virginia Harvest

Date: Fri, Aug 13, 2010 Wine Tasting

With Loudoun Valley Vineyards harvesting their Pinot Noir this week and Breaux Vineyards getting ready to start harvest next week I wanted to follow up on my previous post about the early Virginia harvest. Before getting to the details, let's look at the numbers. 2010 has been a hot and dry summer. To see how hot and dry, let's take a look at weather data for Loudoun County and Charlottesville
